Summary
Zavthier and Gart meet Klen, who plans to draw Vordin out and give Alicia the chance to escape. Zavthier wants deaths kept to a minimum. The headmaster tells the students that Klen and Alicia are thieves who stole from the school, and with Vordin’s power gives them the strength to take the Book. Klen answers with shadow beasts.
Alicia uses the plants’ hunger to break their tank. The snail takes her own shape and torments her for failing as a hero, but she fights back and wins. A doorway appears and Drel’s voice tempts her through it, but she sees the trick, and the headmaster appears in a monstrous form. Alicia flees, only to be caught by Andrew, who traps her in a plant and prepares to cut off her head.
