Vordin is the Devil Beast King of the North. His citadel is the crater of Mount Volt in the far north. He appears as an enormous dragon with cracked, crystal-studded scales and green eyes, scarred from his last battle with the heroes. He can also take the form of a tall, scaled man with blue hair and X-shaped scars.
Personality
Vordin is proud and patient, and his attachment to humans is, as Zavthier puts it, deeper than Clevatess’s. He considers the present age of humans and kings a false world built on a distorted legend.
History
The age of heroes
More than 1,100 years ago, Vordin fought the heroes summoned by Toa. While a double of him occupied the battlefield, he disguised himself as a human called Vod and travelled for a year with the hero Wright, who was writing the Legend of the Hero. Wright later invited him to the Audience Chamber at the heart of Toa, where Wright had massacred the Toans and the heroes ended their own resurrections. Vordin’s invasion completed the destruction of Toa’s capital, which sank into the sea. This ended the era of true heroes, and Vordin carried the memory of it ever after.
The scheme
In the present Vordin works through humans. He spoke as a whispering voice to Drel after the dragon hunt, lent him Devil Blood, and appeared in the mirror to Milea, the hidden head of the Union. Through them he gathered the five Books of Toa, had humans develop a way to collect the scattered fragments of Wright’s soul, and planned to resurrect Wright to learn the rest of his plan to destroy Toa. His salamander-like avatars, marked with X scars, act as his messengers. One of them stole the Book of the Furnace from Clevatess.
Death
In the Chamber above the clouds Vordin fought Clevatess and told him the true story of Toa and Wright. While they fought, Laswell entered Wright’s body, which woke not as Wright but as Toa. Vordin rushed to greet his old friend and was cut to pieces by Toa’s light. A Devil Beast King reincarnates after his death; Clevatess bid him to return without “unnecessary memories”.
