The Solsein Seminary is the oldest seminary in Edthea, on the eastern end of Sakiria Bay east of the mouth of the Dorn River. It is indispensable for Boelate’s elite and a holy place of the Eld religion.
Description
Children aged twelve to seventeen live and study there for six years behind high outer walls, learning culture, morality, creativity and fighting spirit, and may leave only on special days. Its history is said to go back more than a thousand years; it was a training place for clergy before becoming a school about two hundred years ago. The foundations of mythic-era buildings remain as ruins. The grounds include a main building, church, lighthouse, botanical garden, dormitories, sports ground, a pond with an island and a dock.
Its magic department, championed by Drel, trained Boelate’s battle mages. Rank among students depends almost entirely on magical strength, and students and parents must sign an acceptance of risk. Students regularly disappear and return either “Awakened” with a rune or drained and expelled. These are the trials run through a mirror by the “headmaster”.
The Town of Origin
Solsein stands where “The Town of Origin” (Beginning Town) of the Legend of the Hero once was, the place where the hero receives a revelation and faces trials. Its Book of Toa, handed down in the family of Bishop Allozar, gives absolute power within the grounds, even over a Devil Beast King. Behind its mirrors lies a dark world, and beneath that a red world containing Drel’s “secret chamber”, the Mirror Labyrinth and a factory where puppets were built from the remains of infants and devil beasts.
The Solsein incident
After the three-nation conference, exchange students from Hiden (Clevatess and Alicia in disguise), Eslinn, Orgg and Slada arrived, along with undercover teachers. The resulting night of the black tower saw Clevatess fight the school’s awakened students, Alicia pass both trials, the Union open the gates of the holy sites and the island of Toa rise from the sea to the north. Princess Milea erased a day of memories and blamed the missing Chancellor.
