Summary
Gart finds the prison holding Clevatess, unaware it holds only a part of him, and agrees to help Rhode against Drel. At the furnace, Luna cannot open the door, so Klen goes in through the chimney. Inside waits the king of Hiden, who should be dead. He overpowers Nelluru and takes Luna.
Alicia’s immortality keeps her alive against Drel, who tells her about his past. Twenty-five years ago he and Margo were partners. Margo beat him for the title of Sword Master and was given a sword by the king, a blade that takes the soul of the first thing it kills. On an expedition against a dragon of the North, their party was wiped out and Margo badly wounded, so Drel finished the dragon with Margo’s sword. The blade absorbed the dragon, and a voice began to speak to Drel. In the present, Drel summons an undead dragon, knocks Alicia off a ledge and heads for the furnace, just as the king prepares to throw Luna into the fire.
