The Devil Beast Kings (also “Demon Beast Kings” or “the Four Pillars”) are four immensely powerful beings, each ruling the devil beasts of one direction around Edthea.
| King | Title | Domain |
|---|---|---|
| Clevatess | of the Moonlight | The South (Moon Mountain) |
| Zavthier | of the Mist / Lost Fog | The West (the Grand Forest) |
| Laswell | of the Deep Blue | The East (the seas around Slada) |
| Vordin | of the Scorching Flames | The North (Mount Volt) |
Nature
- Each King is born in and draws power from a domain, and is far weaker outside it. They cannot leave their domains in their full form and instead send avatars, possess hosts or work through servants.
- Only Devil Beast Kings can produce Devil Blood.
- When a King dies he reincarnates after a period ranging from a few days to a few years, often without his memories.
- Only another domain-holder, or a fully evolved true hero, can give a King a real fight.
In legend
In human legend, heroes with weapons from Hiden will one day defeat the four Kings and lead people to a wider world. In a thousand years of records, no hero has succeeded, and the late King of Hiden admitted that “true heroes no longer exist”.
The truth
The Kings expanded their territories in response to the aggression of Toa. More than 1,100 years ago Toa summoned heroes from another world, and a two-hundred-year war followed in which the heroes, at their peak, surpassed the Kings and killed the predecessors of Clevatess and Laswell. Vordin ended the war about a thousand years ago. According to Zavthier, the invisible wall beyond the Kings’ territories exists to contain Toa, and the Kings exist to keep it sealed, which raises the question Laswell asks openly: why the Kings keep humans penned in at all.
